Eva Pietzcker

Eva Pietzcker was born in Tübingen, Germany in 1966 and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Nürnberg.  She is currently a free-lance artist in Berlin with focus on printmaking.

Ms. Pietzcker’s work features prints executed using the Japanese Woodblock printing techniques that she learned during her studies as an Artist-in-residence at Nagasawa Art Park, Japan.  The Japanese technique, which is based on the use of water-based inks and the process of hand printing with the baren, clearly differs from the Western technique of relief printing using oil-based inks and a press.  During the print process, the inks are pressed deeply into the Japanese handmade paper, thus creating an impression similar to that of a watercolour.  This technique offers a wide range of cutting and printing effects and has the advantage of requiring only natural non-toxic materials and very little space.

Artist’s Statement

The images of my prints come from landscapes. By working with simple, foundational elements of life like stones, waves or mountains, I want to “reconnect to the root” and reveal vital energy.

I highly value spontaneity. My images should come effortless, like by themselves. The elaborate process of printmaking is the perfect counterpart to that.

For keeping fresh I constantly oscillate between poles like complexity and simplicity, description and abstraction, the concrete form and the spirit dimension.

All of these are woodblock prints, printed with water-based inks in the Japanese technique. As I print often very painterly, some might differ slightly. But the condition is always good.
