About the Artist
Artist’s Statement
My etchings depict diverse architectural themes: images of New York City skylines, buildings and bridges, and from my own backyard. I work in the printmaking technique of intaglio in which the areas etched are below the surface of the plate.
I start the image abstractly from the forms observed. The intaglio techniques of line, aquatint and soft ground lend themselves well to finding the lights and rich darks in these images. The colors are a challenge to discern and become an integral aspect of the etching. I do not so much execute the initial idea as I develop it in the course of the intaglio process.
The plates are inked “a la poupee” i.e. colors are applied and wiped in specific areas. Editions are usually 50, hand-pulled by the artist.
